ITEM DESCRIPTION
The part number SH01-13700 (also written as SH01-13-700 or SH0113700) refers to the factory OEM Garrett Dual-Stage Sequential Twin Turbocharger (Bi-Turbo) assembly.
It is designed specifically for Mazda's 2.2L SkyActiv-D 4-cylinder diesel engine (Engine codes: SH01, SHY1, SHY4, SHY6, SHY8).
Unlike a standard single turbo, this is a sequential bi-turbo system. It contains two separate turbocharger cartridges integrated into a single housing to eliminate turbo lag:
High-Pressure (HP) Turbo (Small): Garrett GT1238Z. This spools up quickly at low RPMs to give you immediate throttle response.
Low-Pressure (LP) Turbo (Large): Garrett GT1752S. This takes over at higher RPMs to provide maximum power and boost throughout the top end.
This assembly is found in several Mazda models produced between 2012 and 2020 equipped with the 2.2L SkyActiv-D engine:
| Model | Generation / Code | Engine Power Outputs |
| Mazda CX-5 | KE / KF Series | 150 HP (110 kW) & 175 HP (129 kW) |
| Mazda 6 | GJ / GL Series | 150 HP (110 kW) & 175 HP (129 kW) |
| Mazda 3 | BM / BN Series | 150 HP (110 kW) |
If you are looking at this part because your current turbo failed, you are not alone. The Mazda 2.2D twin-turbo setup is known for a couple of specific failure points:
Bypass Valve / Rivet Failure: A very common issue on early versions of this turbo is the internal changeover/bypass valve rivet wearing out or snapping. This prevents the exhaust gas from switching correctly between the small and large turbo, causing a sudden loss of power or a "Low Boost" error code.
Carbon Buildup: The SkyActiv-D engines are prone to carbon accumulation in the intake and EGR system, which can restrict flow and put extra stress on the turbochargers.
Pro-Tip: If you are replacing a blown unit, always swap out the oil feed pipes and flush the engine oil. Debris from a failed turbo can contaminate the new one instantly. If only one internal wheel is damaged, you can sometimes save money by buying just the specific high-pressure or low-pressure CHRA (cartridge) replacement rather than the entire massive housing assembly.
